THE BUILDING: Colton Hall was built in 1927 by the developer Keitt P. Walker, who did several other buildings with landscaping, like 1088 Park Avenue, with its unusual courtyard garden. Walker's organization, the Garden Plan Company, also built 333 E.57, 350 E.57, and 325 E.72 around this time. Generally, the Garden Plan buildings were characterized by compact and intelligent planning, a shallow lot coverage allowing for cross-ventilation, large casement windows, and extra communal features including roof decks and gardens. Another particular feature of Colton Hall is the Art Deco lobby with views through the stunning wrought iron doors into the Common Garden.
